What to do in La Rochelle?

La Rochelle is known for its history and cozy bars, cafes, restaurants and beaches. La Rochelle's versatility means you can experience a lot there. Stroll past the medieval towers to the port and discover the town's maritime history. Would you rather spend a day at one of the beautiful beaches? From these beaches you can also take a beautiful walk along the impressive cliffs that are located along the coast. This is a great experience if you are a real hiking fanatic.

La Rochelle's most famous sights

La Rochelle is best known for its three medieval towers: Tour Saint Nicolas, Tour de la Lantern and Tour de la Chaîne. From each tower you have magnificent views of the old port. At Tour Saint Nicolas, discover the royal rooms where the princes stayed and at the Tour de la Chaîne, the place where there used to be exhibitions and taxes were inoculated for the port. Furthermore, at the Tour de la Lantern, behold the place where ships were stripped of their weapons and where later the prison was. This tower was also formerly used as a lighthouse.

Another fun sight in La Rochelle is le Vieux Port (the old port) which was an important trading post in the Middle Ages. From the quay you look out on the beautiful towers. Be sure to sit down on a terrace to really enjoy the view. From the old harbor you can also easily walk into the old town to experience even more culture. For example, visit the special city hall with combined Gothic and Renaissance style in the structure.

Are you out and about with children? Then it is a good idea to visit the aquarium of La Rochelle. Here you will find extraordinary fish and sea creatures from all the world's oceans. Moreover, in the underwater tunnel you can come face to face with impressive sharks, rays and other fish. Also be sure to visit the turtle sanctuary. In fact, these often wash up on the beach in winter due to exhaustion or damage to their bodies. The aquarium in La Rochelle helps them get back on their feet.
