Explore the Atlantic coast from your campsite in Vendée

Stretching from Brittany to the Spanish border, the west coast of France is famous for its long sandy beaches, laid-back seaside towns and relaxed lifestyle. The Vendée region, located midway between Brittany and Aquitaine, enjoys one of the sunniest climates on the Atlantic coast — ideal for a mix of beach days, nature escapes and family activities.

Good to know before exploring the Vendée coast

  • Safe swimming for families – Looking for a beach with lifeguards and space for the kids to run wild? Head to Saint-Jean-de-Monts, Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez, Brem-sur-Mer or Les Sables-d’Olonne. These resorts offer wide sandy beaches, calm waves and supervised zones during the summer season.
  • Vélodyssée: cycling the Atlantic coast – The Vélodyssée bike trail follows the Atlantic coastline for over 1,200 km, from Brittany to the Basque Country. In Vendée, it offers more than 180 km of signposted cycle paths through dunes, marshes and pine forests. Whether you cycle a short loop or a multi-day stage, it’s a scenic and safe way to explore the coast.
  • On foot along the GR8 – Hiking fan? The GR8 long-distance trail runs along the French Atlantic coast and crosses the Vendée over 200 km, from Bouin to La Tranche-sur-Mer. Expect ocean views, wild beaches and hidden coves – a true treat for walkers.
  • A day off the coast: Puy du Fou – Located inland, the Puy du Fou is around 1.5 hours from the coast, but absolutely worth the trip. This award-winning historical theme park stages epic live shows that will captivate the whole family. Book early!
  • Island hopping on the Atlantic coast – Fancy a sea breeze and a ferry ride? Plan a visit to Île de Noirmoutier with its salt marshes and beaches, or the more remote Île d’Yeu, perfect for cycling and nature. Further south, Île de Ré offers charming villages, and Île d’Aix (near Fort Boyard) is car-free and wonderfully peaceful.
  • Castles and cultural outings – Discover Vendée’s rich history with a visit to the medieval Château de Talmont-Saint-Hilaire, explore the ruins of the Vieux Château de Commequiers, or let the kids run free at the interactive Château des Aventuriers in Avrillé – part castle, part adventure park!
