The most famous sites in La Rochelle
La Rochelle is best known for its three medieval towers: Tour Saint Nicolas, Tour de la Lanterne and Tour de la Chaîne. Each tower offers a breathtaking view of the old port. At the Tour Saint Nicolas, you can discover the royal chambers where the monarchs stayed, and at the Tour de la Chaîne, the place where exhibitions were held and taxes collected for the port. At the Lantern Tower, you can also admire the place where ships were disarmed and where the prison was later located. This tower also once served as a lighthouse.
Another great attraction of La Rochelle is the Vieux Port, which was an important trading post in the Middle Ages. From the quay, you can admire the magnificent towers. Don’t hesitate to sit down on a terrace to take full advantage of the view. From the old port, you can also walk into the old town to soak up even more culture. Visit the extraordinary Town Hall, for example, whose structure combines Gothic and Renaissance styles.
Are you going with children? Then be sure to visit the La Rochelle aquarium. Here you’ll find extraordinary fish and sea creatures from all the world’s oceans. What’s more, in the underwater tunnel you can meet sharks, stingrays and other fish. And don’t forget to visit the turtle sanctuary. Turtles often wash up on the beach in winter, exhausted or hurt. La Rochelle’s aquarium helps them to better health.
